Disposal Site
Any site, other than sanitary landfills and inert landfills, where solid waste is permanently placed.

Sanitary Landfill
A disposal site where controlled solid waste is deposited or on any land or water, and engineering design principles are used to contain the waste within the facility to ensure proper processing and handling to prevent any disruption or danger to public health, safety, and the environment.

Inert Landfill
A disposal site receiving controlled solid waste that does not permanently react chemically or biodegrade, decompose within the landfill.

Transfer Station
A facility where controlled solid waste is unloaded from waste collection vehicles and later reloaded into large-capacity transport vehicles, barges, or rail transport on land, or water transportation to processing and disposal facilities.

Thermal Treatment Plant
A fixed or mobile facility where controlled solid waste is processed in a controlled environment through large-scale combustion, gasification, plasma technology, pyrolysis, or other processing methods under controlled temperature, or atmospheric pressure.

Material Recovery Facility
A facility designed and operated to process controlled solid waste using mechanical methods to separate useful materials from the waste stream for use as raw materials or output.

Communal Commercial Composting Facility
A facility where organic controlled solid waste undergoes microbial decomposition in a controlled aerobic environment to convert organic material into output such as humus, which can be used as soil conditioner or fertiliser. This may include vermicomposting, windrow composting, aerated static piles, or aerated in-vessel composting systems serving two or more premises: and in the case of commercial composting facilities, that produce compost for sale.

Biogas Facility
A facility where biogas is produced through anaerobic digestion of biodegradable organic controlled solid waste for use as an energy source.

Refuse Derived Fuel Facility
A facility where the production of fuel output is derived from controlled solid waste through a combined process that includes separation, drying, shredding or compaction, which may involve the recovery of recyclable materials and the removal of non-processable materials such as soil and rocks.
